For example, painting 5 tonnes of steel with an estimated surface area of 100 m²/tonne, 2 coats, paint coverage of 6 m²/litre, and 10% wastage:

Total area = 5 × 100 × 2 = 1000 m²
Base paint required = 1000 ÷ 6 ≈ 166.67 litres
Including 10% wastage = 166.67 × 1.10 ≈ 183.33 litres
