The Global Sumud Flotilla: A Call to the Muslim Ummah to Stand With Gaza

The story of Palestine is the story of our collective conscience. For more than seven decades, our brothers and sisters in Gaza have endured bombardment, blockade, hunger, and humiliation. Today, as of September 28, 2025, a beacon of hope— the Global Sumud Flotilla—sails defiantly across the Mediterranean, a fleet of over 50 civilian vessels carrying food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to Gaza’s besieged shores. This unprecedented mission, uniting delegations from 44 countries, represents the largest civilian-led convoy in history, determined to challenge Israel’s illegal 18-year blockade amid the ongoing genocide that has claimed over 65,000 Palestinian lives.

This is not just a mission of activists. It is a mission of humanity. It is a mission of faith. It is a mission that reminds us, as Muslims, that “The believers are but one body; when one part suffers, the whole body feels the pain.”

The Flotilla of Steadfastness

“Sumud” in Arabic means steadfastness, resilience, and patience in the face of oppression. The Global Sumud Flotilla embodies this spirit. Launched in mid-2025 by coalitions including the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, and Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, it carries humanitarians, doctors, journalists, and ordinary people of conscience aboard small vessels loaded with essential supplies. Their purpose remains clear: to shatter the blockade, deliver hope to a land of despair, and proclaim to the world that Gaza will not be forsaken.

Yet, as these peaceful ships advance—now in the final, decisive leg of their journey, aiming to reach Gaza’s coast as early as today—they have faced relentless sabotage. Drone strikes have targeted vessels like the *Alma* and *Family Boat* off Tunisia in early September, with explosions, communication blackouts, and unidentified objects reported near Greece just days ago. Internal tensions, including protests over LGBTQ+ participation, have tested unity, but the convoy presses on. Bolstered by naval escorts from Spain and Italy—deployed as observers and rescuers after recent attacks—and cheers from global voices like Turkish President Erdogan’s commendation at the Bosphorus Forum, the flotilla sails into history. It is time for the Muslim Ummah to amplify this resilience.

The Cry of Gaza

We must never forget: Gaza is not just a strip of land. It is the heart of resistance, the front line of dignity, the living symbol of the Ummah’s endurance.

– More than 2 million people live under siege, with famine declared in Gaza City by the UN’s food security authority.

– Hospitals lack medicine; children battle malnutrition; families drink contaminated water.

– Bombardments have razed homes, schools, and mosques, killing over 65,000 since October 2023, half of them women and children.

– And yet, despite all this, Gaza endures—its people the very embodiment of sumud.

Every blocked aid truck, every sealed port, every child’s tear is a divine reminder of our duty. The Prophet صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: “The example of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of one body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Sahih Muslim).

If Gaza aches, we all ache. If Gaza is besieged, the entire Muslim Ummah is under siege.

Pakistan’s Responsibility

As Pakistanis, we bear a sacred responsibility. From our nation’s founding, leaders affirmed solidarity with Palestine—our passports once declared validity “for all countries except Israel.” This was no mere slogan; it was a principle etched in our soul.

Today, with the flotilla nearing Gaza’s horizon amid drone threats and naval tensions, Pakistan must transcend rhetoric:

1. Diplomatic Action: Escalate at the UN, OIC, and global forums. Demand immediate protection for the flotilla, investigations into drone attacks, and accountability under international law.

2. Humanitarian Aid: Dispatch medical supplies, food, and Pakistani volunteers to reinforce the convoy, joining voices from Malaysia’s Sumud Nusantara and beyond.

3. Public Mobilization: Rally universities, mosques, civil society, and media. Let Friday sermons invoke Gaza in du‘ā’ and deeds; amplify calls like those from 150 French and Belgian artists urging naval protection.

4. Unity with the Ummah: Align with Turkey, Iran, Malaysia, Qatar, and now even European nations deploying warships. Together, our collective voice can drown out the oppressor’s arms.

A Call to the Ummah

This is not solely Gaza’s battle; it is the Ummah’s jihad for justice. Every Muslim must reflect: What will I do for Gaza?

– If you cannot sail, then speak—share updates from the flotilla’s live tracker.

– If you cannot give, then pray—for safe passage as vessels like the *Gaza Sunbirds* carry aid against starvation.

– If you cannot go, then mobilize: Raise voices on social media, in communities, in masjids. Join global petitions demanding an end to the siege.

Support the flotilla not with words alone, but with heart, du‘ā’, and unwavering commitment to justice. Allah commands in the Qur’an:

“And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and for the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper’?” (Surah An-Nisa 4:75).

Gaza’s people are those oppressed, crying out. The flotilla is their helper, slicing through waves toward them. The Ummah must be their protector.

The Courage of the Sea

In 2010, Israel’s assault on the Mavi Marmara martyred nine aboard. Today, their blood stains the seas, fueling every sail. Volunteers, including climate icon Greta Thunberg on the steering committee, know the perils—cramped quarters, rationed meals, night watches for drones—but embrace the honor of this path.
